POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for conducting scientific literature searches, writing literature review reports, collaborating with scientists and Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR; https://www.cir-safety.org/) staff to develop safety assessments of ingredients in cosmetics and other personal care products in accordance with procedures (https://www.cir-safety.org/supplementaldoc/cir-procedures), and working with the Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (Panel; https://ingredientsafetyexpertpanel.org/) at quarterly meetings in Washington, DC.  The position entails summarizing and reviewing published and unpublished chemistry, toxicology, toxicokinetics, and dermatology studies on multiple ingredients and ingredient groups to be evaluated at quarterly public Panel meetings, interacting with the Panelists during their deliberations at the meetings, and finalizing safety assessment reports based on the Panel’s decisions and directions.  In addition, the position involves evaluating and applying new and emerging tools to facilitate the development of safety assessments based on advanced concepts and approaches in toxicology and related fields.  Approaches may include, for example, the coordinated use of ingredient grouping strategies, read-across methods, and other tools to help address critical data gaps for specific toxicological endpoints in safety assessments, when appropriate.  Prior knowledge of these strategies and tools is not required, but an ability to quickly learn related analytical principles is a key to success in this role.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

  • Provides knowledge and expertise in collecting, analyzing, and summarizing relevant data for the issuance of safety assessments on cosmetic ingredients. Works with CIR staff, the Panel, and outside collaborators on assigned projects to help advance CIR’s capabilities in these areas.
  • Undertakes the development of individual cosmetic ingredient safety assessments.
  • Searches literature and databases to identify published scientific articles and other publically-available information that are relevant for the safety assessments of the ingredients and ingredients groups assigned
  • Reviews abstracts, selects which full versions of relevant studies to retrieve, and writes a comprehensive, accurate, clear and concise summary of the collected literature. As available, analyzes and incorporates clear and concise summaries of unpublished data received.
  • Attends Panel meetings and participates in the review (i.e. required in-person attendance in Washington, DC). CIR staff are knowledgeable about their reports and able to interact with the Panel to identify data gaps, to respond to questions regarding available or needed data, and assist the Panel in developing language to express ideas under discussion. Maintains in written form all requests and/or changes required by the Panel.
  • Revises and edits each report in a timely fashion after each meeting, addressing all comments.
  • Throughout the period of report development, continually monitors the published literature for new information. Maintains a well-organized file of all information collected during the safety assessment process.
  • Represents CIR at professional meetings, and documents such meetings and other contacts.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: BS, or equivalent degree in chemistry, biology, physics, toxicology or related discipline, experience in techincal writing and literature review, and an ability and interest to quickly learn toxicological approaches applicable to the conduct of human health safety assessments.

Experience: 2+ years (BS) or 1+ years (MS)

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily via telecommuting, with quarterly in-person participation, in a non-smoking setting, with required business attire.
